The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile , has been granted the responsability of organizing the Chilean Computing Week 2009, which will be held in city of Santiago de Chile, November 9-14, 2009. This is the nation wide annual event on Computer Science that brings together researchers, engineers, and students from Chile and many other Countries, mainly from LatinAmerica, Europe and North-America.
Santiago de Chile (33º27′ S, 70º40′ W) lies in the center of the Santiago Basin, a large bowl-shaped valley consisting of a broad and fertile plain surrounded by mountains. It is flanked by the main chain of the Andes on the east. The city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541 with the name of Santiago del Nuevo Extremo. Actually the city has a population of 5,5 millions people.
The Chilean Computing Week is an event created and sponsored by the Chilean Computer Science Society (SCCC). The SCCC activities started in 1984 with the objective of promoting computer science in Chile and LatinAmerica. One of its most relevant achievements is the consolidation of its Annual International Conference as an event in which high-quality research is promoted in the region. Proceedings of this conference are regularly published by IEEE-CS Press. The conference is in English.
The SCCC International Conference takes place during the Chilean Computing Week. In addition, the SCCC sponsors other events which usually come as initiatives from local research groups working in specific areas of Computer Science. These take the form of Workshops on determined subjects whose objectives are to present results from ongoing research projects and provide a point in time and space for discussion and experience communication among people.
